19/11/09 In memory of Danny (Adanti). One of the nicest, kindest horses ever put on earth. Thank you for all your patience and letting me learn from you. I miss you loads and hope you are pain free, with plenty of polo mints in your new pasture. Your ever loving mummy, Jacqui.
Sid the Shetland and Princess the Coloured Dartmoor, basking in the spring sun.
These two pictures are of a Tabanos Bovinus, more commonly known as a Giant Horse Fly or Stout. It was found on a horse at Dalby Forrest, North Yorkshire. This one measured 24mm in body length. Usually it is only the female that eats a diet of blood to provide protein in order to produce eggs, by using a scissor action to cut the skin to gain access to the blood, which is then sucked up.
At present there are no insect repellent sprays to repell these.but they do tend to avoid smoke. It has been found that they only fly on hot sunny days and can be heard by a loud buzzing noise they make.
The next four pictures are of dogs taking a cooling dip at Bramham Horse Trials after a very hot Cross Country day on Saturday 5th June 2010.
Just wish we could have joined them.
